About:
The ICRC’s Regional Delegation to the UK and Ireland has two offices, one in London and one in Belfast. The delegation has an operational and a diplomatic identity. It is a ‘Global Reach’ delegation that seeks to improve the UK and Ireland’s decision-making, policy and practice on issues regarding conflict, humanitarian action, IHL and seeks the UK and Ireland’s support to enable ICRC action. It conducts protection activities, including detention visits in both countries. It coordinates with the British and Irish Red Cross Societies on its influencing agenda, Movement coordination as well as humanitarian needs in Northern Ireland.
About the role
Purpose of the post
The delegation is offering one (1) legal internship at its office in London, for a period of up to one year. Provisional start date will be at the beginning of January 2023. The intern is expected to conduct their work from the delegation’s office in London, though there is some flexibility for sporadic remote work.
Main duties and responsibilities
The legal intern, reporting to the legal coordinator:
- Conducts thorough legal research and analysis, particularly on issues related to public international law, including international humanitarian law.
- Drafts reports and reviews documents on legal issues and other topics related to the work of the delegation, including international humanitarian law.
- Attends meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including government officials and UK armed forces.
- Drafts regular and timely reports and analyses on meetings and events attended.
- Assists with managerial and administrative tasks as necessary.
Required qualifications & skills
- A university degree in law or international relations.
- A master’s degree specialising in public international law (or at least 5 years of university studies including an equivalent training in public international law).
- Excellent knowledge of public international law, including IHL and human rights law.
- Knowledge of the ICRC and its activities.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Maximum of one year of professional experience related to international law since graduation, or two years including unpaid internships / traineeships.
Desired profile and skills
- Strongly motivated by humanitarian work.
- Strong legal research, drafting, analytical and writing skills.
- Prior work experience, including voluntary experience – particularly in government, military or international organisations, or in the fields of international relations, humanitarian policy / multilateral diplomacy or arms control & disarmament.
- Flexibility and ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, ability to bring together complex information in an easy-to-read format.
- Ability to work well within a team.
- Understanding of how to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
Further Details
This is a full-time internship position (35 hours per week).
Additionally, they offer:
- Competitive renumeration based on skills, qualifications and experience.
- London Underground travel costs equivalent to the cost of travel in zones 1 and 2.
- 28 days annual leave.
